Modern Combat Martial Arts (MCMA) teaches the White Lotus System of Unarmed Combat. Our sole purpose is to serve as the authorized teaching vehicle for the system’s physical curriculum. We provide the structured pathway from first principles to applied proficiency, maintaining a clear and respectful distinction between mechanical training and the intellectual framework of the system.
Our Teaching Authority & Philosophy
I am Robert Graham, a Certified White Lotus System Instructor with over 20 years of dedicated study under Grand Master Brian K. Leishman. My role is not that of a system creator, but of a guide who has walked the path and is authorized to teach its physical progression. Our philosophy is rooted in demystification: we replace martial arts ambiguity with scientific protocols and measurable progress.
The Core Distinction: Mechanics vs. Elements
A fundamental principle guides all MCMA training:
- MCMA TEACHES: The physical mechanics, exercises, and training methods. Students learn via mirror neuron replication from precise demonstrations, following strict protocols for form, tension, and timing.
- THE WHITE LOTUS DIGITAL LIBRARY CONTAINS: The intellectual property—the six categories of elements (Human, Biomechanical, Combative, Processing, Psychology, Environmental) and their cause-effect relationships. This requires separate purchase.
We provide the flawless “what” and “how.” The Digital Library provides the complete “why.” This clear boundary ensures the integrity of the White Lotus System while giving students a transparent pathway to total understanding.
The Structured Pathway: Basic Skill Development (BSD) First
The White Lotus System prescribes a non-negotiable foundation. MCMA teaches this through a clean, two-phase progression that respects the brain’s need for isolated mastery before complex application.
PHASE 1: BASIC SKILL DEVELOPMENT (BSD) – The Solo Mechanical Foundation
(White Belt to Orange Belt)
This phase is dedicated exclusively to building an unshakable solo foundation. There is no partner work, no sparring, and no ambiguous “application.” The focus is purely on ingraining perfect mechanical form through the system’s three pillars of mastery:
- White Belt – Spatial Placement: Exclusive focus on Positions. Students learn the isolated, primary positions for one skill at a time (beginning with Guarding) with soft muscle tension and slow velocity. The goal is pure spatial awareness and form.
- Yellow Belt – Spatial Movement: Introduction of Actions. Students learn the precise movements between positions for their first skill, while beginning to learn the positions for the next skill (e.g., Striking).
- Orange Belt – Full-Body Integration: Mastery of Presentations. Students integrate their first skill at a presentation level, while learning the actions for the second skill and the positions for the third.
Completion of Orange Belt means a student has built a complete solo mechanical foundation and is prepared for the context of partner work.
PHASE 2: INTERMEDIATE SKILL DEVELOPMENT (ISD) – Partner Application
(Green Belt to Black Belt)
Only with a solid BSD foundation does the training context change. ISD is not about learning new techniques; it is about applying the exact same mechanics mastered in BSD against the variable conditions provided by a partner. This phase introduces the physical exercises for the Combative Elements—Timing, Distance, Technique, Tactics, and Strategy—within the safety of a structured partnership.
The Six Core Fighting Skills
Mechanical proficiency is built through the systematic mastery of the Six Core Fighting Skills in a logical, cumulative order:
- Guarding
- Striking
- Blocking
- Parrying
- Grappling
- Throwing

Our recommended Focused Skill Progression ensures deep mastery of one skill set before layering on the next, creating true unconscious competence and eliminating the “patchwork” approach of cross-training.
Begin Your Foundational Journey
The path to justifiable confidence—the kind that holds up under pressure—begins with a decision to build from the ground up. MCMA provides the authentic, structured starting point.
- Build Your Foundation: Start your journey in Basic Skill Development through our Online Curriculum or In-Person Classes.
- Seek Deep Understanding: When ready, access the White Lotus System Digital Library to learn the elemental science behind your mechanics.
